Firearms accessories magazine limits Maryland

Maryland restricts magazine capacity to 10 rounds maximum

If you sell firearms accessories, you cannot ship magazines holding more than 10 rounds into Maryland. The restriction applies to the product itself, not your business model — it is lawful everywhere else. You can sell the same catalog to the rest of the country without restriction. Fourteen states plus Washington DC have similar limits; the rest have none. This page covers what it costs you to get this wrong, how to enforce it inside your store, and what a payment processor sees when you ship where you should not. The rule is simple. The control is not.

Sold subject to a limit · Maryland

Maryland restricts magazine capacity to 10 rounds. It is one of fourteen states plus Washington DC with a state-level limit, where the rest of the country has none.

Nothing about the product is unlawful nationally — it is unlawful into Maryland, which makes this a catalog and geo-blocking problem rather than a business-model one.

What this means for your store

A magazine holding eleven or more rounds cannot be shipped to Maryland, whether or not the customer is licensed. You must refuse those orders or route them to a fulfillment address outside Maryland. If you sell to an existing Maryland customer, you cannot ship a product you would have refused at checkout. Shipping a prohibited magazine into Maryland is a state violation independent of federal law, and payment processors treat it as evidence of compliance failure. An underwriter reviewing your store will see your product catalog, your shipping destinations, and your fulfillment data. If you ship a ten-plus-round magazine to a Maryland address, you signal to the acquirer that you either do not know your legal obligations or do not enforce them. That is a material underwriting issue. The cost of getting it wrong is not a fine — it is your processing account.

The control that actually enforces it

You control this at the product level, not the order level. Add a metafield to each magazine listing the number of rounds it holds. In your Shopify shipping profiles, set a rule: magazines over 10 rounds do not ship to Maryland addresses. Shopify does not enforce this automatically. If the rule lives only in your head or in a notes field, someone will ship a prohibited item, and that single order becomes evidence that your compliance is not real. A geo-block in the shipping profile is checkable. A mental note is not. Test the block before launch by attempting a purchase as a Maryland customer.

Why an underwriter cares

A payment processor does not care about magazine capacity law itself. It cares about your ability to control what ships where. If you ship a prohibited product to a state that prohibits it, the underwriter sees a merchant who either does not understand their obligations or does not enforce them. That is a compliance red flag independent of the product category. Evidence of an actual control — a shipping profile rule, a product metafield, testing records — is what the acquirer wants to see. Without it, your store looks like a compliance risk, and the processor will reprice or exit.

Frequently asked

Can I sell magazines that hold more than 10 rounds at all?

Yes. You can sell them anywhere except Maryland. The restriction is geographic, not categorical. You can sell a ten-plus-round magazine to customers in all other states without limitation. The control is a shipping profile rule that blocks those products to Maryland addresses only. That is the entire scope of what you need to change.

What if a customer says they are licensed or military?

Maryland's law applies to the magazine itself, not the buyer's status. A license or military service does not exempt a civilian from the restriction. You cannot make an exception based on claimed credentials without verification you have no legal obligation to perform. The safer approach is to refuse the order and direct the customer to a retailer licensed in Maryland.

How much does this cost to implement?

Adding a round-count metafield to your product catalog takes a few hours. Setting a shipping profile rule takes minutes. Testing takes minutes. There is no per-order cost. The cost of not doing it is your payment processing account. If you sell several hundred orders a month to Maryland, shipping one prohibited magazine per month is enough to trigger underwriter review.

Play it straightA migration moves your data — it is not a way around a platform or processor rule, and it will not get a decision reversed. You remain responsible for fixing whatever triggered the review, for telling a new processor the truth about your business and your history, and for complying with Shopify's Terms of Service and your new provider's rules. What we make certain of is narrower and more useful: that when you do have somewhere to sell, none of your catalog, customers, order history, content or SEO got lost getting there.
