Kratom and Alabama

Kratom is banned in Alabama and may not be sold into the state at all.

As of 1 July 2026, kratom is banned in Alabama. You cannot sell it to anyone with an Alabama address, and you cannot accept payment for it on behalf of an Alabama customer. The complexity is that kratom remains legal at federal level — it is lawful to manufacture and sell nationally — which means your store will attract orders from Alabama that you must refuse. The gap between federal and state law is where enforcement happens. This page covers what you must block, how to build that block, what your payment processor will want to see, and the questions merchants in Alabama actually ask.

Cannot be sold here · Alabama

Kratom is banned in Alabama. As of 1 July 2026 it is one of nine states plus Washington DC that prohibit it outright, while kratom remains legal at federal level in the US.

The gap between federal and Alabama law is the whole problem: you are selling a product that is lawful nationally into a state that prohibits it, and an underwriter reviewing your store will look for the control that stops that happening.

What this means for your store

Every order placed by an Alabama resident must be refused at checkout. You cannot ship kratom to the state, cannot accept payment for it there, and cannot route it through a third party. The cost of getting this wrong is threefold. First, a chargeback and an account flag when a customer disputes the transaction after you ship and they report it to their card issuer. Second, a MATCH entry if your processor has to file a Suspicious Activity Report due to prohibited product sales. Third, an underwriting review: if your next processor pulls your history and sees kratom sales into a banned state, they will treat it as evidence you do not control your fulfillment or do not know your legal obligations. A single shipment can trigger a review that stalls your whole account.

The control that actually enforces it

You block Alabama at the shipping profile level in Shopify. Create a shipping profile that excludes Alabama, then assign every kratom product to that profile. This prevents checkout from completing to an Alabama address. Do not rely on a note in the order system or a post-purchase check — the control must be in the platform itself, visible to any underwriter auditing your setup. If the block is only a manual step, it will break when you are busy, when staff change, or when you move stores. A shipping profile is auditable and it survives a migration.

Why an underwriter cares

An underwriter reviewing your store will see kratom as a federally legal product and Alabama as a state that bans it. That gap is a red flag independent of kratom's safety or quality — it signals a merchant who ships where they should not. The underwriter wants to see a shipping profile or product restriction that proves you do not sell into Alabama. Without visible proof of the control, they will assume you either do not know the law or do not enforce your own policies. Either conclusion kills your application. A processor's job is to avoid merchants who create compliance risk, and shipping prohibited products into banned states is textbook compliance risk.

Frequently asked

Can I sell kratom in Alabama at all?

No. Kratom is banned in Alabama as of 1 July 2026. You cannot sell it to anyone in the state, and you cannot accept payment for it on behalf of an Alabama customer. Every order to an Alabama address must be refused at checkout. There is no exemption, no licensing path, and no grey area.

What happens if I ship kratom to Alabama by mistake?

A customer chargeback is likely — they will report the transaction to their card issuer and dispute it. Your processor will see a prohibited product sale into a banned state and may file a Suspicious Activity Report. You will acquire a MATCH entry, and your next underwriting application will be rejected. A single shipment can damage your processing history for years.

How do I prove to my processor that I do not sell to Alabama?

Build a shipping profile in Shopify that excludes Alabama, then assign every kratom product to it. This prevents checkout from completing to an Alabama address and creates an auditable record. An underwriter can verify the block by reviewing your shipping profiles. A manual note or post-purchase check is not sufficient — the control must be in the platform.

Play it straightA migration moves your data — it is not a way around a platform or processor rule, and it will not get a decision reversed. You remain responsible for fixing whatever triggered the review, for telling a new processor the truth about your business and your history, and for complying with Shopify's Terms of Service and your new provider's rules. What we make certain of is narrower and more useful: that when you do have somewhere to sell, none of your catalog, customers, order history, content or SEO got lost getting there.
