Kratom and Arkansas

Kratom is banned in Arkansas and cannot be shipped into the state.

As of July 2026, kratom is banned in Arkansas. It remains legal at federal level across the US, but Arkansas prohibits it outright. That gap—between federal legality and state prohibition—is where your business risk lives. If you ship kratom into Arkansas, you are knowingly breaching state law, and your payment processor will find that during underwriting. This page explains what the rule means for your store tomorrow, how to control it, and why an acquirer will not approve a merchant who ships there anyway. There is no grey area here.

Cannot be sold here · Arkansas

Kratom is banned in Arkansas. As of 1 July 2026 it is one of nine states plus Washington DC that prohibit it outright, while kratom remains legal at federal level in the US.

The gap between federal and Arkansas law is the whole problem: you are selling a product that is lawful nationally into a state that prohibits it, and an underwriter reviewing your store will look for the control that stops that happening.

What this means for your store

You cannot sell kratom into Arkansas, even to one customer. If an order arrives at checkout with an Arkansas address, you must refuse it. You cannot route it to a wholesaler, redirect it to a customer pickup point outside the state, or ship it and hope. Any shipment into Arkansas is a violation of state law and evidence of weak control to an underwriter. If you have existing customers in Arkansas who bought before you knew the ban, you cannot fulfil future orders for them. The cost of getting this wrong is not a refund dispute—it is your processor reviewing your shipment logs, seeing Arkansas orders, and concluding you knowingly shipped prohibited goods. That flags you for higher scrutiny across your entire account and can trigger a reserve or termination. The control must be automatic, not a manual checklist.

The control that actually enforces it

The control lives in Shopify shipping profiles or checkout rules that block Arkansas orders before payment. You set a shipping profile that excludes Arkansas entirely, or use checkout logic that prevents the order from completing if the address is in that state. If kratom is one product among many, use per-product shipping profiles so only kratom cannot ship to Arkansas. A note in your head or a promise to staff not to ship there is not a control—it fails the moment someone forgets, and an underwriter will spot it in your order history. Shopify gives you the tools to make this automatic. Use them.

Why an underwriter cares

An underwriter or acquirer reviewing your store sees that you sell kratom, notes it is banned in Arkansas, and then checks your shipment logs. If Arkansas orders appear there, you have demonstrated that your control is broken or non-existent. That is a red flag independent of any other risk factor on your account, because it shows you either did not know your own restrictions or chose to ignore them. A high-risk gateway or acquirer will ask for proof that your system prevents Arkansas orders before you go live. A screenshot of your shipping profile settings, and a sample of fulfilled orders with none to Arkansas, is what they want to see. Without it, they will not move forward.

Frequently asked

Can I sell kratom in Arkansas?

No. Kratom is banned in Arkansas as of July 2026. You cannot ship it into the state under any circumstances. Any order with an Arkansas address must be refused at checkout. There is no legal way to fulfil kratom orders for Arkansas customers.

What happens if I ship kratom to Arkansas by mistake?

Your payment processor can see shipment data and will find it during underwriting or during a review of your account. That signals weak or missing controls and can result in a reserve, higher fees, or account termination. If you discover you have shipped to Arkansas, contact your processor immediately and demonstrate how you will prevent it going forward.

Do I need to contact my Arkansas customers and tell them why I cannot ship anymore?

If you have existing customers in Arkansas who previously bought kratom from you, they may attempt to reorder. You cannot fulfil those orders. A simple, honest note—'We can no longer ship this product to your state due to local law'—is clearer than silence and protects you from chargebacks. Do not mislead them about why.

Play it straightA migration moves your data — it is not a way around a platform or processor rule, and it will not get a decision reversed. You remain responsible for fixing whatever triggered the review, for telling a new processor the truth about your business and your history, and for complying with Shopify's Terms of Service and your new provider's rules. What we make certain of is narrower and more useful: that when you do have somewhere to sell, none of your catalog, customers, order history, content or SEO got lost getting there.
