Kratom and Tennessee

Kratom is banned in Tennessee, and you cannot ship it there.

As of 1 July 2026, kratom is banned in Tennessee. You cannot ship it into the state at all—not in any form, not to any customer. The rule is absolute: no sales, no exceptions. The complication is that kratom remains legal at federal level in the US. That gap between federal law and Tennessee's ban is where your problem lives. An underwriter reviewing your store will see you selling a federally lawful product and want evidence that you are not shipping it into states where it is prohibited. This page covers what that control looks like, why it matters to your payment processor, and what to do if you are already serving Tennessee customers.

Kratom is banned in Tennessee. As of 1 July 2026 it is one of nine states plus Washington DC that prohibit it outright, while kratom remains legal at federal level in the US.

The gap between federal and Tennessee law is the whole problem: you are selling a product that is lawful nationally into a state that prohibits it, and an underwriter reviewing your store will look for the control that stops that happening.

What this means for your store

If you sell kratom and you have customers in Tennessee, you must stop shipping to that state immediately. Any order placed by a Tennessee customer is one you must refuse at checkout. If you have existing customers there, you cannot fulfil their repeat orders. The operational cost is real: you need a geo-block or shipping profile rule that catches Tennessee orders before they reach your payment processor. If that rule exists only as a note on someone's desk, not as a live control in your store, you risk both chargebacks and a compliance flag during underwriting. Payment processors take state-law violations seriously because they expose the processor to regulatory scrutiny. A store that ships kratom into Tennessee looks like a control failure, and that failure is an underwriting red flag whether or not the processor enforces state law itself.

The control that actually enforces it

In a Shopify store, you have two paths. First: set up a shipping profile that excludes Tennessee entirely, so the product becomes unshippable there at checkout. Second: use Shopify Markets to block sales to Tennessee customers altogether. Both are live controls—they stop the order in real time. A note in a spreadsheet is not a control. If your shipping profile or market rule is only documentation, a customer can still place an order, and you will discover the problem during manual review or after a chargeback arrives. The control must live in your store's configuration, not in your head or a document.

Why an underwriter cares

An underwriter looks at kratom sales into Tennessee as evidence of a deeper problem: you either do not know your state restrictions, or you know them and ship anyway. Both are material underwriting risks. A store selling a federally lawful product into a state that bans it is showing inadequate compliance infrastructure. Underwriters want to see a documented, live control that prevents Tennessee sales—a shipping profile rule, a market block, or both. If your store can receive and process a Tennessee order, you fail the control test. That failure can be grounds for account review or termination, independent of the kratom rule itself. The evidence of control is what separates a compliant merchant from one that looks like it is guessing.

Frequently asked

Can I sell kratom to customers in Tennessee?

No. Kratom is banned in Tennessee as of 1 July 2026. You cannot ship it into the state at all, under any circumstances. Any customer who tries to order kratom to a Tennessee address must be blocked at checkout. If you are already shipping to Tennessee customers, you must stop immediately and contact them to explain the legal change.

What happens if I accidentally ship kratom to Tennessee?

You risk a chargeback, a compliance flag during underwriting, and potential account review by your payment processor. The processor sees an order shipped into a state where the product is banned as a control failure. Even one order can trigger scrutiny. The safest move is to set up a live shipping profile rule or market block that makes Tennessee orders impossible before they reach payment processing.

Do I need to migrate to a new payment processor to keep selling kratom?

Not for the Tennessee rule itself. What you need is a live control inside your Shopify store that prevents orders from shipping to Tennessee. If your current processor requires that control and your store has it, you can stay. If you cannot implement the control, or if your processor terminates you for the compliance gap, a migration to a processor that accepts kratom sellers may be necessary—but the control must come first, in either store.

Play it straightA migration moves your data — it is not a way around a platform or processor rule, and it will not get a decision reversed. You remain responsible for fixing whatever triggered the review, for telling a new processor the truth about your business and your history, and for complying with Shopify's Terms of Service and your new provider's rules. What we make certain of is narrower and more useful: that when you do have somewhere to sell, none of your catalog, customers, order history, content or SEO got lost getting there.
