Kratom and Louisiana

Kratom is banned in Louisiana, and you cannot ship it there.

As of 1 July 2026, kratom is banned in Louisiana. You cannot legally sell or ship it into the state under any circumstance. This creates a hard compliance boundary: if your store ships kratom anywhere in the US, you must refuse every order with a Louisiana address. The rest of this page covers what that control looks like in your Shopify setup, why your payment processor cares about it, and how to answer the FAQ questions your customers will ask.

Kratom is banned in Louisiana. As of 1 July 2026 it is one of nine states plus Washington DC that prohibit it outright, while kratom remains legal at federal level in the US.

The gap between federal and Louisiana law is the whole problem: you are selling a product that is lawful nationally into a state that prohibits it, and an underwriter reviewing your store will look for the control that stops that happening.

What this means for your store

You must block all orders shipping to Louisiana addresses. This is not a grey area—the product is prohibited, full stop. If an order slips through and ships to Louisiana, you have shipped an illegal product into a state that bans it, which creates exposure for you and raises a red flag for any payment underwriter reviewing your account. Your customers in Louisiana cannot buy from you at all, even if they try. Existing customers in that state must be notified that you can no longer serve them. The cost of getting this wrong is both legal liability and payment processing termination—underwriters treat state-law violations as high-risk patterns, and a single shipment of a banned substance can trigger account closure.

The control that actually enforces it

In Shopify, you enforce this block at the market or shipping level. The clearest method is to disable sales into Louisiana entirely using Markets, so checkout rejects Louisiana addresses before payment. Alternatively, you can create a shipping profile that excludes Louisiana and tag kratom products to use only that profile, but this is fragile—it depends on products being tagged correctly and staff remembering the rule. A note in a spreadsheet or a Slack message will eventually fail. The control must live in Shopify's configuration, not in someone's memory. Without it, a confused customer or a careless order can ship a banned product across state lines.

Why an underwriter cares

Payment underwriters care about this because shipping a banned substance into a prohibited state is a compliance violation independent of the product category itself. Even though kratom is legal at federal level, a processor sees a store that is knowingly or negligently shipping into a state that forbids it—that is a pattern of disregard for state law. An acquirer reviewing your account will ask for evidence that you have a control preventing Louisiana orders. A geo-block in Markets, a disabled shipping profile, or a documented shipping rule is what they want to see. Absence of control is what triggers account review or termination.

Frequently asked

Can I sell kratom to customers in Louisiana?

No. Kratom is banned in Louisiana as of 1 July 2026. You cannot ship it there under any circumstance, and you must block all Louisiana addresses at checkout. Any order that reaches a Louisiana customer is a violation of state law and will flag your account in underwriting.

What happens if an order slips through and ships to Louisiana?

You have shipped a banned product into a state that prohibits it. This creates legal exposure for you and signals to payment underwriters that your compliance controls are broken. A single shipment can trigger account review or closure. You must notify the customer, arrange return or recovery if possible, and tighten your blocking rules immediately.

How do I block Louisiana orders in Shopify?

The safest method is to disable sales to Louisiana using Markets, so checkout rejects the state before payment is taken. Alternatively, create a shipping profile that excludes Louisiana and apply it to all kratom products, but this requires consistent tagging and staff discipline. The control must live in Shopify's configuration, not in notes or memory.

Play it straightA migration moves your data — it is not a way around a platform or processor rule, and it will not get a decision reversed. You remain responsible for fixing whatever triggered the review, for telling a new processor the truth about your business and your history, and for complying with Shopify's Terms of Service and your new provider's rules. What we make certain of is narrower and more useful: that when you do have somewhere to sell, none of your catalog, customers, order history, content or SEO got lost getting there.
